April 4th will mark the 60th Anniversary of the formation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The anniversary sees a “new” NATO, doubled in size since its founding, with an expanded international role.
The anniversary coincides with a NATO summit to be held in Strasbourg, France from April 3 to 4. As leaders from the member states gather there will also be those who gather to oppose NATO from a variety of perspectives.
Not all the opposition will be centred in Strasbourg, as witnessed by the recent speech given by Russian President Medvedev, in which he linked new Russian military spending with an expanded NATO.
Given these developments Peace Alliance Winnipeg believes it is essential for Canadians to examine the issue of NATO. The question to be resolved is a simple one: “Should Canada remain in NATO?”
