Date: Saturday, June 19, 2010
Time: 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Location: begins at the University of Winnipeg
The “Rally for Refugees” is to honour the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children who are forced to flee from their homeland under threat of persecution, conflict and violence. We also want to take this opportunity to thank the Government of Canada and all Canadians for welcoming us to their country and sharing their land with us. It will be a presentation of compelling narratives from refugees who have survived the horror of war and human cruelty, as well as cultural celebrations with dance, music poetry, gratitude, joy, fear and pain. It is a response to the Government on the New Refugee Reform that will considerably affect the lives of refugees in Canada and around the world.
The “March”
We are marching from the University of Winnipeg to the Legislative building. Here we will address the Government of Canada and the Canadians locally and nationally by thanking them for giving us a place to call Home. We will also hear different speakers talk about refugees’ difficulties and how we can all make a difference to better their lives in their new home, as well as hear stories from refugees living in our city
Following the speakers, there will be cultural celebrations across the street at Memorial Park, including music featuring Winnipeg musicians, food and refreshments, and cultural displays and crafts.
