Four years ago you may have been one of the thousands of people in Winnipeg that joined millions around the world to voice our opposition to war in the months leading up to the March invasion of Iraq.
We need your voices now, even more urgently than we did in 2003. On January 10th the United States announced plans to send a further 21,500 troops to Iraq, a move which has been seen by many as an escalation of that war. A few weeks earlier Canada’s Prime Minster was also calling for more Canadian troops to be sent to Afghanistan.
Canada’s involvement in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the nature of this involvement is an issue of great importance to many Canadians. On Saturday, March 17th there will be a Canada wide day of action to mark the 4th anniversary of the beginning of the current war in Iraq. The Canadian Peace Alliance (CPA), an umbrella organization dedicated to the promotion of peace issues, is organizing these actions to raise awareness and call for an end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan by bringing the troops home now.
The Peace Alliance Winnipeg will be organizing the action in Winnipeg. Our peace walk will be leaving the Manitoba Legislature at 12:30 p.m., followed by a peace-related program at Broadway Disciples United Church. Your organization is welcome to set up an information table at the church. Please let us know by Wednesday, March 14th if you require a table.
