On October 28th Peace Alliance Winnipeg participated in the 15th Global Justice Film Festival at the University of Winnipeg. Throughout the day we had many visitors to our table, inquiring about our work, signing our petition to the Canadian government in support of the people of Venezuela, and also getting details about becoming a PAW member. I spent time chatting with people about our work, specifically the Hiroshima Lantern Ceremony and our annual Peace Walk. Many people picked up literature and seemed genuinely interested in what we are doing as a group.
I also took in two films, Sonic Sea, about the effects of ocean noise pollution on the whale population, as well as The Resurrection of Victor Jara, a documentary about the legendary Chilean folk singer and his execution by Pinochet’s regime. It was a great film and a learning experience for me as I have to admit I didn’t know much about Jara at all. Although a great injustice, I believe his story is one of those great examples of people coming together to support social justice and human rights.
I hope to volunteer at our table again next year as it was a great opportunity to get out in the community and spread our message!
